SGH Activities in 2016
“Global Geography”(【Subject:Geography and History】For First-Year Students)
Conducting the fieldwork in Suwa (Nagano) in May, doing research on local natural resources, the characteristics of industries, the cultural or economic connections with foreign countries, and trying to grasp the social problems that the region has.
As a post-fieldwork activity, posting the reports to the local newspaper, including findings and impressions gained from the research.
Participating in the 16th Global Environment Paper sponsored by Chuo University and received the School Prize.
Participating in the poster session for high school students sponsored by the Association of Japanese Geographers in fall.

“Studies in Sustainable Society I” (【Subject:The Period for Integrated Studies】For Second-Year Students)
In the year-round project “Studies in Sustainable Society I”, 31 research groups of the students conducted fieldwork in public institutions, private companies, universities and NGOs. In this fieldwork, the students have done all the preparations and the arrangements to visit the facilities.
The project of “Studies in Sustainable Society I” is composed of the three major categories based on the research subjects or themes set by each student’s group.
Category1: ”Life and the Environment”
Category2: ”Economy and Human Rights”
Category3: ”Culture and Expression”
Each category includes two or three courses, which are the basic to provide research skills and fundamental lectures necessary for students to do research in groups. In each category, students are required to present their interim reports and the peer-reviews of their research process.

Economic Development and the Environment
Discussing environmental issues with foreign exchange students at Ochanomizu Univ.

Participating in the National Convention of the 2nd Youth Challenge for environmental activities sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment, and received the Excellent Award for the proposal on “Fashion and Environment Problems ".
Through participating in the 19th National Junior High School Web contest, the three groups of our school won the gold medal for their various activities and creating the original web site to promote the activities.

International Cooperation and Gender issues
Creating picture books to enlighten the importance of girls' education for mothers living in developing countries in local languages (Khmer language) , as one of the projects to support those local people, the students sent the books to them. In addition, the students called for all the students to donate writing instruments and send them to Cambodia.

Participating in the 17th Nikkei Stock Leagues, in which the four groups received the prizes for “Solving the Global Social Issue by Investment“.

Information Technology and Creativity
Acquiring the knowledge and skills related to information technologies, such as programming, and the skills and mindset for problem solving, and working on the project assignments, with the aim of solving and improving the social issues.
Inviting experts from the companies as well as visiting the organizations to have the special lectures and the discussions.

Art and Expression(non-verbal communication)
Visiting "Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum" as a field work to observe both the front side and the back side of the museum with various perspectives.

Conducting Fieldwork in Okinawa.
As a final summary of SGH 's three-year project, students wrote the articles based on their research projects and edited English newspapers. In this newspaper project, it is expected that each student uses the strategies, skills and techniques acquired by SGH programs and as the name of the subject “Studies in Sustainable Society II” suggests, this project seeks to integrate their knowledge, experiences or global points of view and enhance their cooperativeness, global mindset, autonomy and communication skills.
Participating in the project developed by GEIC through partnership with The Japan Times and ELEC, a class received the "Foreign Media Prize" in the "Middle School High School English Textbook Newspaper Contest in 2016".
Conducting a training program to Taipei with 30 students (second-year students), at Taipei First Girls High School (TFGH), and exchanging ideas with students of TFGH on the subjects our students are working on. Having an opportunity to welcome TFGH students and teachers to our school.
Visiting Bangkok (Thailand) as youth members of AEON Asia Youth Leaders sponsored by AEON One Percent Club, and joining fieldwork with students from Asian countries and proposing a solution to improve water quality in rivers and canals in Bangkok.
Participating in the Special Tanner Lecture given by Professor Dame Carol Black, president of Cambridge University Newnham College, and Dr. Atsuko Toyama, hosted by Ochanomizu University.
Participating in "Forum with the Nobel Prize Winners" hosted by the Yomiuri Newspapers to hear valuable stories of Dr. Reona Ezaki and Dr. Shinya Yamanaka.
Conducting a special lecture on "How to Explore Your Research by Taking Advantage of the Library" given by Library and Information Division at Ochanomizu University.
